Ryan Labreque, PhD, Deputy Director of Research

Ryan M. Labrecque, PhD, is a Professor of Criminal Justice at John Jay College and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York (CUNY). He also serves as the Deputy Director of Research for the Corrections Lab. Dr. Labrecque received his PhD in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati in 2015. His primary research interests and areas of expertise include the use and impact of restrictive housing, the development and validation of risk assessments, and the implementation and evaluation of correctional services.

Prior to joining CUNY, Dr. Labrecque was a Senior Manager in the Corrections and Reentry Research Program at RTI International. He also previously served an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Central Florida, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Portland State University, a Research Assistant for the University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute, and in several correctional practitioner roles in the New Hampshire and Maine Departments of Corrections, including as a Correctional Officer, Mental Health Counselor, Social Worker, and Probation and Parole Officer.

During the last 15 years, Dr. Labrecque has worked with local, state, and federal agencies to conduct research on complex institutional and community corrections policy issues. He has secured nearly $9M in external funding to support his research, including awards from the National Institute of Justice and Bureau of Justice Assistance. Dr. Labrecque has published more than 55 peer-reviewed articles and his work has appeared in Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Criminology & Public Policy, among other scholarly outlets. Dr. Labrecque received a Distinguished Scholar Award from the ASC Division on Corrections and Sentencing and an Outstanding Member Award from the ACJS Corrections Section in 2025. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of Corrections: Policy, Practice and Research.
